Meet Our Coaches
Coach Barnes first coached as a volunteer in 1999 and became a head coach in 2012. He is a 4x District Coach of the Year for Vernonia HS Wrestling.
He attended Ashland Senior High and Southern Oregon State College.
Outside of coaching, he works on transmission electron microscopes for Thermo Fisher Company. “We coach to inspire and empower student-athletes and leaders by modeling integrity and authenticity, fostering personal growth, love of the sport, and community values.” This is Chris’ second year as head coach and we are so grateful for his positive demeanor and welcoming presence in the Liberty Wrestling program.
Chris Barnes - HS Head Coach
Coach Salzman aka Coach Nick graduated from Hillsboro HS in 2002, where he was a Metro League champion and 2x state placer. Although new to the staff, this is not the first time coaching at Liberty HS; as he was part of the original opening staff from 2003-2006. This is his 18th year coaching wrestling. Many of those years were served as a director of Hillsboro Mat Club, in which he helped grow the program resulting in it being awarded USA Wrestling Top 50 Club from 2017-2023. As a Head Coach for South Meadows MS, he was a pioneer in building girls wrestling before it was sanctioned and led the girls middle school team to its first ever state championship in 2018. He also was commissioner of the Youth Metro League from 2017-2022. Through his leadership, the league grew from a coalition of only Hillsboro and Beaverton feeder clubs to a more encompassing league of over 20 programs, all charted through USA Wrestling. When he is not coaching, you can find him with his family or tattooing at his award winning shop Breaking Ink. Wherever Coach Salzman goes, he strives for excellence. He is passionate about building the Liberty Wrestling Program at every level, with an emphasis on creating a fun, high energy, and positive environment that is welcoming to all. He defines true success through athletes that finish the season and return for the next one.

Christian Ochoa - Youth Head Coach
Coach Christian is a 2022 Liberty Wrestling alumnus and is in his third year as a coach. He loves the sport of wrestling and stresses the importance of creating a positive atmosphere that is safe and fun. He believes the challenges of wrestling teach character through adversity on and off the mat. He returns with a fire to connect and grow the Falcon family!
Carlos Ocampo - HS Assistant Coach
Coach Ocampo is a 2013 Liberty Wrestling alumni, whose dedication and passion brings the competitive experience and life lessons to the mat. He made his mark as a 2x district champion in 2012 & 2013, and a state placer his senior year. Since 2014, he has been involved in coaching at various levels helping young athletes discover their potential both on and off the mat. His coaching philosophy centers on personal growth and resilience - encouraging students to see the best in themselves, work hard toward their goals, and understand they are capable of doing hard things. He is a devoted husband, father and tradesman. When he’s not in the wrestling room, you’ll often find him fishing or enjoying a round of disc golf. He credits wrestling for shaping his character and outlook on life. “Life can be tough, but wrestling makes you tougher. Without this sport, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.”
